STEG was established in the 1930s as Elmira Industries, a volunteer organization. Its first mission of was to find a new occupant for the empty Willys-Morrow plant in the city of Elmira. Financing its efforts with funds raised in the community, the organization convinced Remington Rand to relocate its operations to the plant.
In good economic times and in challenging times, STEG and its business, government and community partners have helped dozens of companies relocate to or expand in Chemung County, ensuring the continued viability of the region. STEG also was instrumental in the organization of the Chemung County Industrial Development Agency and has a history or working with all levels of government and brokering all types of financing to attract and retain businesses and enhance the economic prosperity of the region.
In the 1970s, STEG evolved from a volunteer organization to one with full-time economic development professionals and staff. As a result, today many leading companies call Chemung County home.
